Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared at a Spanish court where he is facing allegations he evaded millions in tax.He appeared this morning. Prosecutors accuse Ronaldo of evading €14.7m ($17.3m; £13.1m) in tax. The Real Madrid star, 32, has previously denied the allegations, saying his "conscience is clear". Ronaldo is the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the Spanish tax authorities. Thousands of people gathered in the rebel-held Yemeni capital today, Monday July 31, to witness the public execution of a man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl. Mohammed al-Moghrabi, 41, was sentenced to death for the June 25 rape and murder by a court run by the Shi'ite Houthi rebels who control Sanaa. Moghrabi was first given 100 lashes and then made to lie flat, his face on the ground, and killed by multiple gunshots by security forces to cheers from the crowd. The public execution was widely aired on Houthi-run media in Yemen, framed as an example of the Shi'ite rebels' efforts to combat crime in their areas.

United States President Donald Trump swore in his newly-named chief of staff John Kelly on Monday, July 31st as Trump looked to the retired Marine general for leadership after a shakeup of his top staff. Uzbekistan said today that it has jailed the eldest daughter of late president Islam Karimov, Gulnara Karimova -once a prominent socialite, fashion designer and singer  after charging her with massive fraud and money laundering. In a statement the Uzbekistan Prosecutor-General’s Office said that “Gulnara Karimova has been charged” with crimes including fraud, money laundering and concealing foreign currency “and she has been held behind bars”. A machete-wielding man has killed one and injured several others after going on the rampage through a German supermarket this afternoon.  The attacker, who reportedly screamed Allahu Akbar, ran into an Edeka shop in the northern city of Hamburg and knifed a customer to death before slashing at four others as he fled. He ran off but was pursued by passers-by who wrestled him to the ground and called police who made an arrest. Heavily armed officers have locked the area down and police helicopters have been seen above the crime scene. A motive for the knifing has not yet been established. According to Bild, the man shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as he launched the attack in a branch of Edeka, Germany's largest supermarket chain.

Pop star Rihanna has been putting in some “work” on global education efforts, and a meeting yesterday with France’s president appears to have paid off. President Emmanuel Macron said on Twitter after the pair met in Paris that he is "committed" to helping address the challenge of 264 million children being out of school. He mentioned the social action platform Global Citizen and a nonprofit founded by Rihanna, the Clara Lionel Foundation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would look for ways to shutter the presence of satellite news station al-Jazeera in Israel, accusing the Qatar-based channel of inciting violence. In a Facebook post Wednesday night, Netanyahu said he had asked law enforcement authorities to shut down the station’s Israel offices a number of times. “Al-Jazeera has not stopped fomenting violence around the Temple Mount,” he said, referring to escalating tensions surrounding Muslim protests against Israeli security measures at the holy site. There were put in place following a July 14 terror attack in which three terrorists shot two Israeli policemen to death with weapons they had smuggled onto the compound. Israel shut the site for two days and re-opened it with new security arrangements including metal detectors and cameras.
