The United States of America has congratulated Nigeria as it marks its 56th Independence Anniversary tomorrow, October 1st. According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the US message was conveyed on behalf of President Barack Obama and the American people by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry. It reads; “On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the citizens of Nigeria as you celebrate your Independence Day on October 1. I recently returned from my third trip to Nigeria as Secretary, and I came away with a strong sense of the nation’s resolve to build a better future. World leaders have hailed the vision of the late Israeli leader, Shimon Peres, as he was laid to rest days after his death at the age of 93. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described him as "a great man of the world", as he led the eulogies. US President Barack Obama said the presence of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at the funeral was a reminder of the "unfinished business of peace". Scottish boxer, Mike Towell, 25, is fighting for his life in hospital after he was knocked out in the fifth round of a bout against Dale Evans. He came into the fight with an impressive record of 11 wins and one draw from his previous 12 fights but couldn't take the heat this time as he was floored by a brutal right hand in the first round.  He picked himself up and continued but a smashing left hook in the fifth round did for him and he had to be carried out of the ring on a stretcher.  The fighter's manager Tommy Gilmour said Towell had suffered a 'serious injury' and is breathing via the use of a ventilator in hospital with his family by his bedside.

Nigeria’s foreign exchange market was tension-soaked yesterday, as the Naira raced towards N500/USD1. It closed at N490/ USD1 in the parallel market, with dealers expecting further rise today to hit the dreaded N500 mark. Surprisingly, the Naira appreciated significantly to N305/ USD at the official interbank market same day, although dealers said foreign exchange was not available to most of the bids. Meanwhile, the global investment bank, Morgan Stanley of United States of America, has warned that its MSCI Nigeria Indexes would be reclassified as Stand-alone next year, if currency restriction was instituted by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Also the World Bank said, yesterday, that Nigeria and South Africa would drag down Africa’s growth rate by 1.6 per cent in 2016, as strings of negative economic indicators continued.

Officials of the Code of Conduct Bureau are set to probe the assets of former state governors like Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state, Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, Chris Ngige of Anambra and other Minister currently serving in this present administration. A statement by the Chairman of CCB, Sam Saba, released by the Press and Protocol Unit of the bureau yesterday, states that some of the former governors now serving in various capacities in the current administration, have not submitted themselves for field verification of their assets they declared. Police in Bangkok on Tuesday, September 27th, arrested two men reportedly from Niger, Laouari Hassane Babale and Awaisou Ibrahim, who were in possession of 215 ATM cards issued by Nigerian banks and Bt34,200 cash, Police Economic Crime Suppression Division Deputy Commanded Pol Colonel Papatdech Ketpan, said on Thursday in a press conference. They were nabbed using the stolen cards from Nigeria to get cash out of ATMs in the Nana area of Sukhumvit, following a tip off from Kasikorn Bank that "Nigerians were using Nigerian cards" in the Nana area of Sukhmvit. Police initially caught Babale, 38, at a Kasikorn ATM in Soi 3. He had 18 ATM cards in his possession. The police raided a hotel room in the area where his accomplice Ibrahim, also 38, was caught with 199 ATM cards and 34, 200 baht in cash. The pair admitted the charges and said they had stolen the ATM cards belonging to others in Nigeria to get cash in Thailand.They were detained and will face prosecution. Photo: Includ

Three Nigerians men and a woman, together with eleven other accomplices currently on the run, were charged in the Court of First Instance on Thursday, September 29th, with attacking two Pakistani men and robbing them of millions in different currencies, belonging to their employer. The 11 others on the run, including another woman, are being accused in the same case of possessing the stolen money.  The defendants, all Nigerians are currently in detention. The main accused, a 31-year-old Nigerian worker, was not present in court to face the charges. The others, of ages ranging between 26 and 41 and among them are two businessmen and two managers, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Those, who are accused of possession of the stolen money, claimed before the panel of judges they were doing business with the other accused and were not aware the money was stolen. A 33 year-old engineer who murdered his girlfriend on Valentine's Day three years ago has been sentenced to death. High Court Judicial Commissioner Collin Lawrence Sequerah said the accused, Cheong Teik Keon, was found guilty of killing Tan Ching Chin, 24, a clerk, was accused of committing the offence against Tan at her home at No. 2703, Taman Hwa Seng, Jalan Rozhan, Alma, in Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia, at about 8.40am on Feb 14, 2013. In sending Cheong to the gallows, Collin said the defence had failed to prove that Cheong was of unsound mind at the time of the offence. "An email written by Cheong five hours before the incident showed that he was not of unsound mind, and I am unable to find the accused's mind so impaired as to not be able to differentiate between what is wrong and what is right. Justice Abubakar Umar of the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja yesterday Thursday Sept. 29th, convicted  a polish woman,  Dora Gilmaska,  alongside her company, Icon Media and Marketing Agency Limited, on one-count charge of fraud brought against her by the EFCC.
