This is the chilling moment a mum smiled in police custody after
allegedly stabbing her 11-year-old daughter up to 70 times in a horror
attack.
Taheerah Ahmad, 39, is accused of stabbing the little girl and hitting her over the head with a pickaxe before setting their kitchen on fire.
She then reportedly went on the run with her eight-year-old daughter Hafsa and hid out in a car park for 17 hours, sparking a major manhunt.
She was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, US, after locals spotted her car.
In a series of disturbing pictures, Ahmad was seen bizarrely smirking for ABC Action News cameras in handcuffs following her arrest.
The 11-year-old, who is not being named at this stage, remained unconscious and in a "very" critical condition in hospital.
Police said the mother was arrested on Tuesday and that she stabbed the youngster an estimated "50 to 70 times."
Ahmad reportedly told officers she had became upset with her children and bound their hands with duct tape
She said the 11-year-old fought back, and she stabbed the girl dozens of times and hit her in the head with a pick axe, according to a police report on the incident.
"The mother had duct-taped their hands, put socks in their mouths and began stabbing the 11-year-old," Tulsa Police officer Jeanne MacKenzie told the local news station.
Investigators say Ahmad's middle child, a nine-year-old girl, was able to escape and go to a relative's home down the street to get help.
But it reportedly took her an hour to get to the property because she was duct-taped.
Relatives told investigators that when they returned to the girl's home, they found her 11-year-old sister with multiple stab wounds.
They also said they discovered the kitchen on fire.
Ahmad was arrested on counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, first-degree arson and abuse of a child.
