Unmarried couples have been repeatedly whipped and caned in front of crowds in Indonesia simply for showing affection in public.
Prostitutes were also punished alongside them in the display in front of a mosque in the country's deeply conservative Banda Aceh province earlier today.
Officials said the three men and five women - including several college students - who were punished had been found guilty of violating religious law by either showing affection in public or offering sexual services online.
They were flogged in front of gathering crowds - including foreign tourists - for breaking Islamic law after Indonesia pledged it would take the widely condemned practice indoors.
On February 28 the Sharia-based provincial government of Aceh issued new regulations to end the public punishments.
The new rules means that the caning can only be done behind closed doors to prevent it being seen by children or being recorded and shared online.
The Aceh administration and the Law and Human Rights Ministry also signed a memorandum of understanding on the new regulation.
But while canings were meant to be conducted in prisons, that's not what happened earlier today.
More than a thousand people - including dozens of tourists - jeered and screamed abuse as the couples and sex workers were flogged.
The three men and five women were whipped multiple times.
