A packed commuter train has ploughed into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey, injuring over 100 people and killing one person. The rush-hour train did not slow down as it entered the station, hit a concrete block and was raised off the tracks, hitting the station ceiling. Part of the station ceiling has collapsed. Emergency workers are on the scene, helping passengers evacuate the carriages. Many were trapped and injured. Dozens of ambulances lined up near the station and more than 10 people have been taken to intensive care.

The Federal Government has declared Monday, October 3rd as Public Holiday to mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Anniversary.  This was announced in a statement released and signed by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Muhammadu Maccido in Abuja today.

There was a protest at the University of Lagos (Unilag) today. According to reports, some students embarked on a peaceful protest but the gates of the school were shut down in the process. Interestingly, the Indian Vice President, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, was to deliver a lecture at the Main auditorium of the school today. No word yet on whether it was cancelled or it went on as planned. Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, says the only industry that has the capacity to move Nigeria out of the current recession is Sports. Dalung said this when he received the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai at his office in Abuja “Sport remains the only industry that can move Nigeria out of recession. It is only in sports that you can enumerate about five to six benefits that are very key to National development. Sports provide valuable employment today. It is a foreign exchange earner and can also help build a tourism base” he said

Cristiano Ronaldo's £15 million private jet crashed while trying to land in Barcelona on Monday evening. The plane, a Gulfstream G200 which he bought last year, is sometimes rented out to private clients or companies. The crash happened at El Prat airport. The plane's landing gear broke on impact, and a runway at the airport was closed. None of the footballer's friends or family was onboard when the crash happened. The pilot was treated for minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt.

U.S President Barack Obama has finally explained why he doesn't ever use the term 'Islamic Terrorism' when describing deadly terrorist attacks carried out by ISIS, saying ISIS' activities affect all including Christians and Muslims. Obama has been criticized by a lot of political observers and even Donald Trump for purposely refusing to refer to ISIS as Islamic terrorists, saying the U.S president has refused to acknowledge that the terror group use Islam to defend their wicked acts.  At a CNN presidential town hall meeting today, Obama was then asked to defend why he refused to say "Islamic" terrorism to a Gold Star mother. "My son gave his life for acts of terrorism," audience member Tina Houchins told Obama at the meeting.
